When I first sat down to watch Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital, I didn’t know what to expect. Found-footage films aren’t really my forte, but this movie managed to shatter my expectations and leave a strong impression. Here’s my honest take on it.

The film’s opening sequence immediately set the tone, immersing the audience in its eerie atmosphere. That initial footage was not only unsettling but also smartly woven into the plot later on. It created a seamless connection between the backstory and the unfolding chaos, which I absolutely loved. It’s rare for a movie to nail such cohesion, and this one did it effortlessly.

Now, while I’m not deeply familiar with the found-footage genre, this movie gave me a fresh perspective on how horror can be presented. The setup was satisfying and well-thought-out, making the scares feel earned rather than forced. It’s clear that a lot of care went into crafting an experience that felt new yet grounded in classic horror elements.

As for the cast, they delivered strong performances, but Jane de Leon stood out by miles. She carried the movie with her presence, making every scene she was in truly memorable. On the flip side, Rob and Alexa, while undeniably annoying (as they were meant to be), brought a sense of realism to the group dynamics. Let’s face it—there’s always that one person in every group who just can’t behave!

That said, I wish Zarck had been given more screen time. As someone who has visited haunted houses plenty of times, I felt his character deserved more development, especially during those critical moments.

I also have to highlight Raf’s performance. It was my first time seeing him, and he was such a vibe! His natural delivery and perfectly timed banter added just the right amount of levity and drama to the scenes. I only wish his character hadn’t been written out so soon—it felt like he had so much more to offer.

The story was easy to follow, but it still held enough mystery to keep me guessing. However, I felt the death scenes could have been more impactful. Some moments, like MJ’s transformation, felt rushed. One second she’s there, the next she’s an unexplainable entity which I somehow get the logic behind it, but I wanted more buildup, more terror.

One thing I would have loved to see is the inclusion of real sounds and original footage captured during the characters’ investigation. Highlighting these elements could have elevated the eerie vibes and made the experience even more disturbing. The runtime, at just 90 minutes, felt a bit short. Adding more depth to these elements could have enhanced the film’s impact without making it feel overstretched.

But I have to commend one aspect I appreciated, which was the attention to detail in the livestream scenes. Every time the monitor showed the livestream feed, I couldn’t help but notice the nonsensical comments popping up on the side of the screen. It added a layer of authenticity, making it feel like a real livestream. These little touches made the movie’s premise even more immersive and believable.
